An Insight Into our Long Serving Staff

Here at RAGT Seeds UK, each and every member of our team is incredibly valued with some employees having worked for us for nearly 40 years!

We catch up with Mark Alda, a member of our long serving staff to get an insight into his time at RAGT and to learn more about him and his role.

Mark Alda

Having worked for us for 21 years and originally joining as a Breeding Technician, we talk to Mark Alda our Glasshouse Coordinator about his time with Europe's Number One Cereal Breeder.

1. How long have you worked for RAGT?

21 years

2. What is your current role at RAGT and how has it evolved since you started?

My current role is Glasshouse Coordinator where I manage the SSD and crossing programmes for the breeders across Europe, as well as any project work and ensuring the glasshouses are maintained. I began as a Breeding Technician supporting all areas of field and glasshouse work, this gave me a chance to learn and progress through the company. I then became the SSD Breeding Officer concentrating on the 2-3 cycle SSD generations going through the glasshouses which led me to my current role.

3. What has been your proudest moment since working for RAGT?

Having the opportunity to evolve the SSD process and change the way we grow the final generation SSD. This has dramatically improved the ear size and provided the breeders with an ear big enough to produce a full ear row in the field, which in turn can allow the breeders to observe the true value of the lines.

4. What do you love the most about working for RAGT?

Being part of a successful company that appreciates its staff.  Giving me the freedom to experiment and make changes to improve the programme.

5. If you could describe RAGT in three words what would it be?

Friendly, Rewarding, Collaborative

6. What has been your career highlight at RAGT?

Getting to use all my past experience and knowledge to design and project manage our newest glasshouses which have proven to give us better results.

7. Tell us a random fact about you!

I have double jointed thumbs.
